Can unmarried couples live together in Dubai?

As of recent legal reforms, unmarried couples are legally allowed to live together in Dubai without facing legal repercussions. This change was introduced in 2020 as part of the UAE's broader move towards a more progressive and inclusive legal system. The update to the law decriminalized cohabitation for unmarried couples, allowing them to share accommodation freely, whether as residents or tourists.

However, while it is legal to live together, cultural sensitivities remain important. Public displays of affection should be minimal, and it’s advisable to dress modestly, particularly in more conservative areas of the city. When it comes to renting an apartment, some landlords or more traditional residential communities may still have their own policies, so it’s wise to confirm beforehand​.

For long-term residency purposes, sponsoring a partner still requires a marriage certificate, so this legal change primarily benefits short-term stays and expatriates.
