The Burj Khalifa is owned by Emaar Properties, the developer behind Downtown Dubai. Emaar is publicly listed on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM), so in a strict sense its ownership is spread across shareholders, but the Dubai government holds a significant stake through the Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD). That government backing is why Emaar’s major projects tend to line up with Dubai’s wider development strategy.

A bit more context:

  • Emaar. Founded in 1997, it’s behind a lot of Dubai’s landmark developments, the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and Dubai Marina among them.

  • The building. Completed in 2010 at 828 meters, still the tallest structure in the world, and built as the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai.

  • What’s inside. It’s mixed-use, luxury apartments, corporate offices and the Armani Hotel Dubai, plus the At the Top observation decks that pull in the tourists.
